Bearded axes with a long, straight handle were already very popular with the Vikings because of their high accuracy, not only as battle axes, but also for felling trees and for carpentry purposes. It is modelled on an archaeological find in Scandinavia dating back to the 11th century. This model typically has the beard pulled far back with a slightly rounded blade as well as the broadly formed eye to firmly hold the handle. Double bevel. Multi-layered laminated head, high carbon content, forge-welded core layer, mild steel body.
Historical Axes and Hatchets
Since the Stone Age, axes have served as tools, weapons, status symbols and, in some cultures, even as objects of ritual religious worship. The historical axes by F. Thelin are replicas of axes created by the Vikings many hundreds of years ago for hunting, defence or house and ship building. (Early to late Viking Age 800-1100 AD)
Traditional and hand-forged
Frederik Thelin continues the old tradition of hand-forged axes and hatchets in Sweden. Each of his unique, highest quality axes is forged by hand on the anvil with hundreds of hammer blows. Multi-layer fire-welded axe heads consist of an impact-absorbing soft iron body with a hard carbon steel core, for high edge retention and long-lasting sharpness.
  • Forged double-layered blades - very hard cutting edges and impact-absorbing soft iron body*
  • Forged by hand from C55 steel
  • Hardened and tempered to 56 HRC
  • Blacksmith's stamp on each axe head
  • Axe head burnt with Black Ferrous Oxide Linseed Oil
  • Hickory handle treated with Burnt Umber Linseed Oil
  • Handle is set by means of a wooden wedge
  • Comes with high-quality leather sheath
