The vinification: Shiraz or Syrah? In Australia and South Africa the name Shiraz is used, while in Europe and also in the USA it is common to call the wines Syrah - but genetically they are identical. The grape, which has its origins in the Rhône Valley, is a wild cross of the »Dureza« and »Mondeue Blanche« grape varieties, which are no longer grown very often.

The best grapes from various vineyards in the coastal region of the Western Cape are selected and carefully harvested by hand in the cool morning hours. This procedure serves to protect them from the intense heat of the day. After a cold maceration lasting two to three days, the mash is fermented for about a fortnight. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for another 12 to 24 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting notes: Powerful and strong, like the Cape buffalo on the label, the full-bodied Shiraz flows into the glass in a dark ruby red. On the nose, it offers a wonderful blend of fruit and slightly peppery aromas. Notes of dark berries, spicy liquorice, ripe mulberries come together here, wonderfully rounded off by nuances of aromatic vanilla and a hint of coconut. The palate opens with a rich fruit profile, modern and with a fresh acidity that provides wonderful balance, with some spice at the end. The wine is exceptionally velvety and balanced, with pleasant acidity and fine tannins. The finish is dense, compact and rich with buoyant freshness.

Food pairings: Delicious with dark meats such as beef, game and lamb, but also fantastic with a cheeseboard. We recommend drinking the wine at a temperature of between 16-18 °C.

Stellenview Premium Wines is picturesquely situated on the northernmost hills of the Devon Valley in Stellenbosch. In this area, the South African wine-growing region of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, South African wines of outstanding quality and elegance have been produced since 1659. Stellenview Premium Wines has taken advantage of the unique microclimatic conditions of the Devon Valley. The warm winds from the Atlantic Ocean provide a warming effect during cooler weather periods, making frost virtually unheard of. On dry summer days, the pleasant winds simultaneously provide a cooling effect that prevents heat build-up in the vineyards. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of up to 270 metres above sea level, making them some of the highest in the whole of Stellenbosch. Although yields are lower at higher altitudes, the vines benefit greatly from the more intense sunlight and the good water-holding capacity of the soil, and develop small berries that delight with their special concentration of flavour and intense aroma. Under the direction of Reino Kruger, Devon Valley produces some of the Cape's best and most highly prized Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Pinotages and Sauvignon Blancs. Their strategy of selecting only the best grapes grown in Stellenbosch has brought Stellenview Premium Wines numerous national and international awards in recent years. The labels of the wines pay homage to South Africa and the country's fascinating wildlife.
